MORGAN’S STORY

“My 12 year old niece and goddaughter Morgan was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). MDS is not common in kids Morgan’s age, which is why it took a while to diagnose her.

We found this out during an annual physical she had where they did a normal blood draw. Her results came back abnormal so they repeated them. She had to be evaluated at the hospital immediately and through a series of tests and labs she was diagnosed.

As a result Morgan’s bone marrow was making fewer red and white blood cells along with platelets.

She was infusion dependent and was in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. My sister worked with an amazing team at Cohen Children’s hospital to find her one! They found one in Poland and the bone marrow was flown to the US.

She had to go through a series of chemotherapy to shut down her immune system prior to the transplant.

Morgan spent months In the hospital with my sister by her side. No parent should have to see their child bare such pain.

In July, Morgan had her bone marrow transplant. She had several complications, including reactions to meds and infusions, which made her extremely weak. She was not eating and spent most of her days sick and sleeping.

In the midst of this, my sister has 2 other children to care for. It has not been easy on my sister, Morgan’s sister’s , and my whole family.

Morgan is home now on a feeding tube to help her gain back her weight. She gets feedings daily, as the Chemo has disturbed her taste buds and has no desire to eat “real food”. My sister had to give up her job during this time to care for her, until Morgan can gain her strength back. She’s a scared 12 year old, that had no control over her body.. and she went from a fearless kid to a fearful one.

Morgan is ONLY 12 and has a full amazing life ahead of her. She loves basketball, loves to dance and do Tik Tok videos, has a funny personality with a bit of spunk. She is a daughter, a sister, a niece, grandaughter, and loving friend and she is our world.” – Morgan’s Aunt, Paula
